Imagine rolling down the street to the community swimming pool or your favorite eatery, or even just going on a pleasant afternoon or evening drive without using one drop of gasoline. It’s no longer a pipe dream! It’s now possible with the luxury electric golf carts sold at the Golf Cart Factory, in Brunswick.
Owner Erik Sims said the Royal-EV brand that his store carries is amazing because they were purpose-built for the road, not just for the golf course, and they carry a price tag of 30% to 40% less than Club Car, EZGo or Yamaha Golf Carts.
These golf carts are designed for street use and tagged as low speed vehicles (LSVs), meaning they can travel on roads with speed limits up to 35mph … and standard equipment includes grab bars and integrated seatbelts. Royal-EVs are also designed, engineered, and assembled in Georgia and offer the most
advanced safety and convenience features.
For example, he said, older carts had only mechanical brakes and no suspension. The Royal-EVs are a result of the evolution of golf carts with full front-end and rear-end suspension and hydraulic disc brakes, he said.
Traditional carts were designed to travel on the golf course at speeds of 14 mph and some later model carts could travel up to 19 mph.
Sims said the Royal-EVs are available in four-seat and six-seat models, are DOT certified and have a 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) and a Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin (MSO) which is needed to title a vehicle.
They share a lot of the same options as other street-worthy vehicles, including coming standard with blinkers, headlights, brake lights, seatbelts, and Bluetooth radio. Storage is standard, as is an integrated cooler in some models.
The two top-of-the-line models – the Ambassador and the Crown – also have a rear back up camera and digital dash display.
We may not have flying cars like many of us dreamed of while watching “The Jetsons,” but these electric carts are definitely the next step in our mobile society.
“It’s like driving a Tesla,” said Sims, of the carts, which are powered by 72-volt lithium batteries. “It’s got the same kind of technology.
Sims foresees a time when the LSVs are more commonplace than they are now, especially since they can operate at up to 35 mph and have most of the safety features of a regular motor vehicle. They also enable local events and venues to expand their parking capacity and are quiet and don’t pollute.
In fact, there are communities throughout the U.S. where golf carts have become the transportation method of choice. The Atlanta suburb of Peachtree City is probably the most well-known for its cart-centric network of multi-use paths that help residents navigate to school, work and leisure activities.
Of course, regular vehicles are used for commutes outside the confines of the city. Other communities that are golf cart friendly include The Villages, in Central Florida, Catalina Island, California and Bald Head Island, North Carolina. “They keep up with speed,” he said. “They’re not impeding traffic.”
The Royal-EVs will travel 40-45 miles without having to be recharged.
“All you do is plug it in,” Sims said. “It doesn’t need to be completely depleted before it’s recharged; you can top it off and have 100 percent power all the time.”
